KORI KOOLMAN GROUP

Kori Koolman Group is an evolving performance collective founded and directed by Kori Koolman. Rather than working with a fixed ensemble, each project brings together a different group of performers across ages, backgrounds, experiences, and physical abilities.

Over the course of an intensive workshop lasting from several weeks to several months, the performers collectively build, inhabit, and continually revise a performance work. Koolman creates tasks, rules, physical situations, and structures through which characters and relationships emerge. Autobiographical material may enter the process, but it is gradually transformed through improvisation, repetition, gesture, touch, voice, and ritual.

The group’s work often examines the family as a physical and emotional system, exploring the unstable relationships between care and control, tenderness and aggression, intimacy, authority, and dependence. Its methodology combines Physical Theatre, Butoh Dance, Method Acting, Dream Work, Psychodrama, and structured improvisation.

Kori Koolman Group will begin working again in New York City this winter. A group of performers will come together for an intensive three-month workshop, culminating in a public performance.
