Floor Plan
Project Description
live performance | 2025
Developed in 2024 as part of the LABA Fellowship, Floor Plan involved a diverse group of NYC residents, representing various ages and backgrounds, who participated in a weekly experimental movement workshop. The workshop served as both a platform for individual research and a space for collaborative creation, enabling the group to collectively develop the piece. This group, formed through the workshop, became known as the Kori Koolman Group.
Dream Work provided the foundation for exploring the symbolic language of dreams and nightmares, while Butoh was used to bring these dreamscapes to life through visceral, primal physical expression. By tapping into their subconscious, participants explored themes of transformation, identity, and memory, decoding the symbolic meanings of their dreams and integrating these insights into movement. The process unfolded in real time, using improvisation, writing exercises, and physical interactions to generate choreography and narrative.
The resulting performance delves into complex themes of care, control, dependence, and loss. Through collaboration, the performers shaped a shared emotional and domestic landscape that reflected a collective exploration of these ideas. Floor Plan was performed by the Kori Koolman Group at the Y Theater in December 2024 and as part of the EXCAVATE Festival at the Brick Theater in February 2025.
